the environment

"The first aim of the prepared environment is, as far as it is possible, to render the growing child independent of the adult."
-Dr. Maria Montessori

The child's environment should always honor his/her interests and developmental needs. A foundational concept to remember is that children have a HIGH sense of order! However, every toy company will combat that, trying to entice children (and you) to buy more! Have you ever watched a child go to a space with every toy imaginable? What does s/he do? Dabble in and out of what is attractive, leaving a mess of toys in the space. IT'S TOO MUCH!!! I'll say it again, "Less is more." Find items that are interesting and developmentally appropriate to accompany an area. Keep in mind, however, that the people and general life within the environment play a primary role—activities are secondary.
